Fira - the most densely built village of Santorini

decor_small_gold.png

As the ship approaches the “black diamond” of the Aegean Sea, as Santorini is characteristically called, the view to the whitewashed cliff- hanging houses of Fira is breathtaking. It’s no wonder that the southernmost island of the Cyclades has been valued as the most beautiful island in Europe and one of the 20 places in the world one should visit at least once in his life.

The island’s capital is the town of Fira, which is spread along the west coast, perched on the edge of the impressive 300-m- high volcanic rock, which guarantees the best view to Thirasia and the volcanic islands of Palaia and Nea Kameni. Passenger ships anchor at Athinios harbour, at a distance of 12 km from Fira and serves as the main port of the island (except for the cruise ships). For your transfer to the capital there are frequent connections with local buses which coordinate their timetables with the arrival and departures of the boats. There are also plenty of taxis. (Radio-Taxi: 22555)

Fira became the island’s capital during the 19th century, when the inhabitants of Pyrgos Kallistis (first capital of Santorini after the abandonment of Skaros Castle in Imerovigli) came to settle for more safety. The typical Cycladic features blend harmoniously with the Venetian architectural elements, as the long –lasting presence of the “Franks” has left its marks to buildings and temples, till today. The low-lying cubical houses, known as “hyposkafa” (= dwellings carved in the rock thus offering high insulation and protection from the extreme winds or the summer heat), are unique. Through year-long studies and efforts, great architects have managed to transform some of these into luxurious accommodations. Fira is one of the most densely built towns of Santorini. Despite the increased construction development, it still remains a true architectural gem.

Firostefani - the "Crown of Fira"

Taking the direction to the north part of Fira, on the way to Imerovigli, a 10- minute short walk leads us to the first traditional houses of Firostefani, which is also described as the "Crown of Fira”, due to its elevation from the capital, spreading right at the edge of the cliff-side.

While it used to be a small village separated from Fira, nowadays, the capital’s houses are so widespread that the two areas have merged. Its characteristic arch at the borders of the village, right after the Catholic neighbourhood, indicates the former entrance to Firostefani.

The area is rather picturesque, with narrow cobblestone path and a unique view to the volcano, while the traditionally built whitewashed houses mingle with the deluxe villas for rent and the luxurious hotels. An old windmill has been converted into a hotels, coffee shop and restaurant.

You will notice the impressive white church of Aghios Gerassimos glowing under the sunlight (1807) while if you walk further up, between the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli, you will find the nunnery of Aghios Nikolaos, which was built in 1651 and is dedicated to Aghios Panteleimon, Aghios Nikolaos and Zoodochos Pigi.
